Tips and Tricks for Building Low-Level Decks

Looking to increase your outdoor living space? If so, building a  low-level deck is a simple and affordable way to do it. If you need extra guidance on building a deck, you’ve come to the right place. Your head may be bursting with deck designs and decking ideas, but without the know-how, it can be a tricky job. In this blog, we will cover why building a low-level deck is a good idea and give you all the tips and tricks to do it.

Why build a low-level deck?

If you are on the fence about building a low-level deck, don’t be. Low-level decks have a lot going for them. They can help make the most of your outdoor space, providing you with room to entertain guests or relax with a good book. Often, low-level decks are built at the same height as the ranch slider that opens up your house. Because of this, this type of deck is great for enhancing your indoor-outdoor flow.

Low-level decks not only help increase your usable outdoor space and improve flow, but they are also a sought-after design feature. A good-looking low-level deck can give the illusion of more square footage. This helps increase your home's overall value when it is time to sell.

This deck design also has the bonus of being suitable for families. A low-level deck is relatively close to the ground. So, they are safer for young children or the elderly at a greater risk of tripping or falling.

Not only is it a safer option, but it is also a more affordable deck option. For one, you won’t need to worry about getting a building permit if the deck is under 1.5m. Plus, low-level decks require fewer materials, as you won’t need safety barriers or railings if your deck is under a metre.

There are plenty of reasons to build a low-level deck for your home. It is also a rewarding DIY project that you’ll be able to smash out of the park. All you’ll need is the right gear and a bit of prior reading up..

Top tips for building low-level decks

Are you interested in building a low-level deck but have no idea where to begin?  Here are our top tips from the pros to help set you on the right track.

1. Nail your low-level deck design

The success of any DIY project lies in the planning. Before you crack into your decking project, you’ll want to make sure you are 100% happy with the design. Things to consider at the planning stage include:

  • Height - Consider whether you want your deck to be flush with your property entrances or standalone. Some may require a built-in step, whilst others might be low enough to forgo this.
  • Materials - Timber is a natural choice for low-level decks, but you’ll need to choose the most suitable option. Because this type of deck is so low to the ground, you’ll need to buy H3 timber as a minimum requirement. This specialised timber helps with moisture, rot and insect damage.

You’ll also want to consider if you want smooth or grip tread decking and what type of finish you are after. All of these things drastically change the look and feel of your deck and ultimately come down to personal preference.

  • The shape and size of your deck - This is another big consideration and will be largely determined by what you plan to use your deck for. If you have particular pieces of outdoor furniture that you want on the deck, take measurements and factor them into your size. As for shape, you’ll want to consider your house's architectural design and outdoor living functionality. Spend time looking at Pinterest or other images to find inspiration for your future low-level deck.

2. Ensure you have the right building consents and resource planning consents to build a deck

Before undertaking any big building task, it pays to ensure your plans align with the building code and abide by the local council's rules and regulations. This means that you won’t run into any unexpected district planning implications.

Generally, building consent is not required for work on decks, platforms, bridges, boardwalks and similar structures where it is impossible to fall more than 1.5m. In saying that, even if your deck is low, resource consent may still be required. So it is important to secure that before you start your build. For further guidance, head to building.govt.nz to find out what can and cannot be done.

3. Consider Ground Level Deck Ventilation

No matter what you do, the ground underneath your deck may get damp. If you are not careful, this can result in mold, rot or decay. None of this is what you want for your brand-new deck! Thankfully, you can take a few precautions to protect your deck and help it last long-term.

As a general rule of thumb, decks that are higher off the ground have better ventilation, as this space allows the ground to dry out more efficiently. However, if you are building a ground-level deck, it is unlikely to be higher than the recommended 30cm off the ground. If this is the case, make sure the underside of your deck is open to allow air to flow freely underneath. Another tip is to go for larger decking gaps to allow better air circulation.

4. Prepare the foundation and ground below your deck if needed

To build a low-level deck flush with your door or ranch slider, you may need to look into site excavation and levelling beforehand. Make this job a breeze by hiring the right equipment from Hirepool. Here are some of our top recommendations for excavation and levelling equipment:

  • Mini excavator: Use a mini excavator to help clear any tree stumps or boulders that may be in the way.

  • Mini skid steer: If your ground is uneven. A mini skid steer can help to smooth this out.

  • Concrete breaker: A concrete breaker will come in handy if you need to break up a concrete pad before you can start building a deck.

Head to our YouTube channel for further guidance on how to level a lawn the smart way. Once you’ve got this knowledge under your belt, you’ll be one step closer to the deck of your dreams.

5. Dig post holes the smart way with a post hole borer

To create a solid foundation for your deck, you will want to create post holes for the piles or footings. Once these are in, brace them in a level position before concreting in place.

Hiring a post-hole borer is great for making light work of this job, especially if your deck is on the larger side. Learn more about the best post hole borer for your job and find out how to dig post holes in our handy how-to guide.

6. Consider built-in shelving or seating for your low-level deck

Max out the practicality of your level deck by adding integrated shelves, planter boxes or seating to the perimeter of your deck. Ultimately, your design will depend on what you plan to use the deck for.

For example, a built-in bench seat is perfect for families that love alfresco dining during the warmer months. Whereas avid cooks or gardeners might love a planter box outside their door for easy retrieval. You could even build shelving or built-in storage on your deck for your tools or gardening equipment, keeping it contained but close by for easy use. Get creative. There’s heaps you could do!

7. To add railing or not?

Typically, a railing is not a safety requirement for low-level decks. However, it may be something you wish to consider if you have small children or pets you want to contain. The addition of railings can also create a greater level of privacy.

If you decide to opt for a railing, you’ll need to ensure that it meets building requirements. You will also want to get some design inspiration before you start your build to make sure it looks good and aligns with your house design.

8. Consider how you’ll protect and maintain your deck

After you’ve spent valuable time and money building your new deck, you’ll want to keep it in good nick for as long as possible.

Firstly, you’ll want to make sure you’ve equipped it with a high-quality stain. This can help to prevent excess moisture and stop the growth of structurally damaging mold. Not to mention, this step can also help with UV protection.

To keep your deck in tip-top shape, make an effort to sweep up any debris regularly. Inspect your deck at the start of every season to check for any wear and tear from the elements. Here are some common things to add to your maintenance plan:

  • Re-sealing - Over time, you may need to re-seal your deck to keep it in good condition.

  • Re-arrange your outdoor furniture - This can prevent the sun from creating uneven colour fading.

  • Trim nearby foliage - It is good to keep nearby shrubs and trees at least 30cm away from your deck to decrease the chance of moss, mold and rot.

  • Sand warped or raised boards - If you find some boards have become warped or raised, consider using an orbital sander to make them level with the rest of the deck.

  • Apply a waterproofing solution - This can help with protection against the elements.

9. Think about what will go above your deck too!

If you enjoy long summers out on the deck, you’ll want to consider sun protection. There are a bunch of different sun protection options that you can install into your deck, allowing you to enjoy the sunshine without worry. Some sun protection options also double as rain cover options, which are great for year-round use and value for money. Check out some of the below options:

  • Pergola

  • Shade cover

  • Shade sail

  • Awning

  • Aluminium cover

  • Deck blinds

10. Decorate that beautiful deck

Once you’ve built your low-level deck, it is time to add the finishing touches. Choose complimentary outdoor furniture that works well with your house architecture and deck design. Add a little greenery to your space with pot plants or hanging plants, and add some outdoor lighting to bring your deck to life. With the right lighting, you can properly showcase your deck and make it a worthy feature and space of your home.

Top tip: If you are hosting an outdoor party in the summer, consider hanging lanterns or fairy lights to create an ambient atmosphere outdoors.
