The original City Care request for "bring a can to work day" to help support the Christchurch City Mission got Hirepool thinking. The Hirepool Riccarton team suggested that Hirepool should co-ordinate a North to South Island run in a “Ute and trailer” collecting cans of food for the Christchurch City Mission.
Cans for Canturbury
Hirepool was part of a national campaign that saw our "Ute and trailer" evolve to a huge 6 wheeler box truck, proudly supplied by Henderson Rentals.
Gerard Hayman, accompanied by Kirsty Fitzgerald from City Care, left Auckland on the 16th of November 2010 after loading up and started heading South for their first stop, out of seven, in Tauranga. That was followed by Rotorua, Taupo, Palmerston North and then Wellington, where Gerard says they received a great reception. Collection point was at the Beehive where they were greeted by crowds of people supporting the cause. It was then to Blenheim followed by Christchurch.
Over the three days, with the much needed help of our fellow New Zealanders, not to mention the five thousand dollars each sponsored to the event by BNZ and Westpac, not to mention JLG and other sponsors, approximately 8 Ton worth of cans, pasta, sanitary items, breakfast cereals, and non perishable items were collected.
Gerard says the reception at the Christchurch City Mission was amazing, with masses of people and camera’s everywhere. This is one mission, well accomplished.
Thank you to all those who brought a can to work to help support this worthy cause. With your help the people affected by the quake in Canterbury had a much brighter Christmas thanks to you.
